We live in the exhale. We come to yoga for the inhale.
Practicing Yoga has been found to have many health benefits. It should not be seen as a panacea or replacement for traditional medical care, but serves as an alternative treatment path. Studies have found that yoga helps anxiety and depression, insomnia, pain management, high blood pressure, post traumatic stress disorder, and it also improves the immune and digestive systems. While yoga may not cure diseases per se, it is a terrific complementary practice to holistic wellness and quality of life.
At breathe, Doris and Urs are delivering their yoga classes in two different methods. Group classes are led by the teacher and allow participants to be guided and to work in synchronicity with other students. In Mysore Style classes students practice at their individual level alongside each other and are supervised and kept safe by the teacher.
As a new student to a group class with either Doris or Urs you need to attend at least one One-on-One class prior. This gives us the chance to explain how and what we teach. It also allows us to find out what group class is most suited to you (45 minutes, $30).
-> INTRO OFFER: Pay $60 and enjoy as many group classes* in 3 weeks as you like.
* Only applies to new students. Must be paid immediately after the first 1:1 class ($30). It starts the next day and is valid for these group classes: Tuesday Hatha 12 noon, Wednesday AVY Beginners 6.45pm, Thursday Hatha 5.30pm, Saturday AVY Beginners 8.30am
Urs now offers a third option: (yoga) classes as they were originally taught, on a One-on-One basis. This guarantees that the delivery of the class fits the requirements of the individual. Depending on the requirements of the student, the classes will involve a selection of asanas (postures, movement), pranayama (breath control), yoga therapy, mindfulness, as well as meditation.
This type of class is ideal for (adults or teenagers):
Urs has been fortunate to study with the highly regarded Indian doctor/teacher Ganesh Mohan, who holds a doctorate in Western and Ayurvedic medicine. Urs also worked with Indra and A.G. Mohan (parents of Ganesh), who themselves were direct students of T.K. Krishnamacharya, the father of Modern Day Yoga. By studying with the Mohans Urs gained valuable insight into the benefits of yoga in general, and One-on-One teachings in particular.
Cost
$45 for 45 minutes ($30 for your first One-on-One)
Longer sessions are also possible
Please email yoga@b-r-e-a-t-h-e.co.nz or call Urs on 021 022 84 300 for an appointment or if you have any queries.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic system which gracefully synchronizes breath and movement. Its objective is to promote a strong flexible body and a focussed mind. This practice also eliminates toxins in the body as the various postures massage your organs in a subtle way. A regular practice of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga will result in improved cardiovascular ability, physical strength, flexibility, stamina, breath control, balance, muscle tone and loss of excess weight. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is the ideal vehicle to start gaining control of your mind – by being able to control your breath - and it also prepares you for meditation later on.

Class Levels
We offer four levels of Ashtanga Vinyasa classes (Beginners / All levels / Level 1 / Level 2). The Beginners' class is ideal to start your yoga journey and is also suitable if you prefer a softer style of yoga. The 'All levels' class is a bit more challenging, but also accommodates beginners. Levels 1 and 2 are natural progressions after practicing for an extended period of time.
The Beginners' class (75 minutes) is where to start if you are new to yoga or come from another style of yoga. We pride ourselves in providing a dedicated Beginners' class (preceded by a One-on-One session) where students learn the fundamentals, such as Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutations), at a pace that caters for beginners. These classes lead students to connect with their bodies’ innate intelligence and will create a new sense of space in them. Most importantly, students will be introduced to the concept of mindful breathing and deep relaxation.

& Urs' teacher John Scott.
All levels - Led classes (90 minutes). See text below.
Level 1 - Led classes (90 – 120 minutes) are guided by the teacher. These classes offer a unique opportunity for participants to refine the practice and to work in synchronicity with the other students - one breath, one movement. Pranayama (breath control) and Meditation are an integral part of these classes.
Level 1 - Mysore classes (90 minutes: start anytime up to 1 hour before the class finishes - leave as early as you like). The student practices alongside other students at his/her own pace, supervised and kept safe by the teacher. This is the traditional way of teaching Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. It allows students to enhance and develop their own unique practice. Students do not have to be long-time practitioners to enjoy these classes, it simply requires a desire to develop a self-practice.
Level 2 - Mysore classes (120 minutes) allow the student to progress further into the Primary Series.

Hatha Yoga is less dynamic than Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga. It endeavours to achieve balance between body, mind and spirit. It frees up the subtle spiritual elements of the mind through Asanas (physical poses), Pranayama (breath and energy control) as well as Meditation. The practice of Hatha Yoga helps to discover your hidden physical and mental potentials. Through a regular practice you will gain flexibility and strength. You will also learn to be more relaxed under stressful situations. Hatha Yoga opens the energy channels, which in turn allow spiritual energy to flow more freely. Poses massage and tone the internal organs and help to prevent diseases. Pranayama supports you in managing breathing problems. Hatha Yoga helps you to focus your mind and prepares it for meditation.
Class Levels
We offer three levels of Hatha classes (Beginners / All levels / Level 1). The Beginners' class is ideal to start your yoga journey and is also suitable if you prefer a softer style of yoga. The 'All levels' class is a bit more challenging, but also accommodates beginners. Level 1 is a natural progression after an extended period of practicing.

The Hridaya (Heart) Meditation course consists of eight meditation classes over an eight week period. Each class includes some theory/ technique presentation, practice and time for discussion and questions. It is suitable for beginners, aspiring to start a meditation practice, as well as for long-time practitioners wanting to enrich and refresh their experience.
Hridaya Meditation is a path of revealing our fundamental essence of stillness, or the Heart, as it was referred to in some of the meditative traditions.
This practice makes it easy and enjoyable to fall in love with meditation and to connect with our essence. It can gradually remove the layers of conditioning, allowing our true nature to shine forth. Such process can bring joy and lightness to our days and can enable us to discover a greater purpose of living with an open heart.

As stress is a major contributor to a compromised immune system, this Gentle Yoga class guides students on a path towards greater relaxation, as well as increased energy and strength, in a welcoming, inclusive, comfortable, and nourishing environment
Students will develop greater body awareness as they move through a carefully structured class, designed to take account of people’s differing levels of capability as well as their unique anatomical differences.
A variety of props are used to help students find their appropriate ‘edge’ in the pose, without unnecessary stress and strain, either physically or mentally.
Based on the yoga principle of using the breath to calm the mind and relax the muscles, this class will focus on poses that stretch, strengthen, and tone while releasing stress and tension from joints and muscles
Each class will include mindfulness and visualization techniques to enhance the mind/body connection, and focus and discipline the mind
The slower, gentler pace is easy enough for beginners, and great for everyone who wants (or needs!) to slow down a bit.

Intuitive Flow is based on classical Hatha Asanas. The flow is sequencing, it is to synchronize the movement with the breath.
My classes include pranayama breath work and Yin asanas at the end of the class to regulate flow and energy. They are open to all levels; it can be a gentle practice or a more dynamic practice. When we listen and tune into our intuition, we are having consideration for ourselves in each moment and are learning to adapt to the strength we apply to each practice.
In this class, I like to tune into each practitioner's energy in the moment and give different options of asanas, so each individual is able to find stillness, to be connected to the breath and to find his or her own level of strength required to be able to practice.

With continued focus on your breath you will move with ease and awareness between carefully selected poses in a creative and meditative practice.
"Here Now Yoga" is at times gentle and at times strong. Often quiet and still. You will be guided to practise with purpose, awareness, and heart. It is a therapeutic and healing practice leading you to your natural state of present moment awareness, vitality, and joy.

Yin Yoga with its gentle long-held stretches is the perfect balance to other more energetic types of yoga, sport, or physical activity, and an oasis from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Each 90 minute class is designed to release stress and calm the body and the mind.
Using props to remove muscle tension, Yin Yoga focuses on the deeper tissues of the body - strengthening, stretching and stimulating to encourage more flexibility and freedom of movement while simultaneously releasing deep tension in the body and relaxing the nervous system. Yin Yoga reduces stress while stimulating regeneration and is especially beneficial for the whole spine, lower back, pelvis/hip area and knees.
A Yin Yoga practice can help us really tune in to the messages of our body, due to its calming and introspective nature. The practice reminds us that regular doses of stillness and relaxation are as important to our well-being as getting hot and sweaty walking up the Peak, or cycling, or running, or other forms of strenuous activity.
Yin Yoga helps us become well-acquainted with the body's capabilities and limitations as we continually observe the sensations that arise. Developing a habit of mindful awareness and bringing that to our other physical and sporting activities, or indeed to our daily working lives, means we'll be better able to listen to our body and potentially prevent injury and over-exertion.
This beautiful, gentle but challenging, and incredibly effective style of yoga is suitable for beginners and more experienced yoga students of all levels of strength and flexibility.

Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese practice, combines slow, controlled movements, meditation, and breathing exercises to cultivate Qi, the internal life energy, to flow smoothly and powerfully through the body.
The Tai Chi classes aim to develop those fundamentals so that by the end, class participants will be able to practise them unaided at any time and place. With continual practice, the balance of Yin and Yang energy and harmony of the inner and outer self can be achieved.
There are six classes running over a six-week period with three movements being taught each week. Tai Chi is a low impact exercise with minimal stress on joints and muscles which will be taught at the beginner level so it is suitable for most ages and fitness levels.
